Unedited Sneak Peek of

A Love that Saves

By Jaimsss P.

Joseph

“Good morning, and welcome to Calculus 100. I know that most of you are freshmen, and this is your first class of the semester, so let me be one of the first to welcome you to Trudale University. I know none of us are excited about courses starting on a Friday, but I promise not to keep you long today. This is a tough course, but with hard work and dedication, I’m confident that everyone will rise to the challenge...”

Dr. Simon continued his played-out speech, and I decided to tune him out. I had heard it a million times. This semester, I was his Calculus Teaching Assistant, and I was already not feeling it. The only reason I agreed to take the job was that Dr. S kept asking. I needed to satisfy my on-campus internship requirement to keep my scholarship and the extra change I’d make from it didn’t hurt, so here I was.

Calculus came easy to me, but I wasn’t looking forward to having to interact with the kids in the class. I wasn’t the most conversational dude, and I definitely wasn’t trying to make friends, but tutoring was a part of my job, so I knew I would have to try.

“... and this young man behind me is Joseph Carver. He’s my Teaching Assistant this semester, and if you have any questions that I’m not available to address, you may contact him using the email address printed on the syllabus. He is also available for tutoring hours two days a week if you need it. He’s aced five of my courses already, so you’ll be in good hands,” Dr. Simon grinned and turned slightly to face me.

“Joseph, do you have anything to add?” He raised one brow, trying–and failing–to pressure me into saying something. I just stared at him for a second but decided to play nice. I opened my mouth to respond but was distracted by the lecture hall door slamming hard against the wall. When I looked toward the entrance at the person bold enough to show up late on the first day of class, I forgot all about Dr. Simon.

All my focus went to the woman who had just walked into the room. I hadn’t seen her since she bumped into me a week ago, and if I was honest, I’d been trying to get her off my mind ever since.

I watched as her hazel eyes scanned the room for a seat. She was biting her bottom lip nervously, and the action made me shift in my seat. I had already thought that she was pretty, but I didn’t remember just how gorgeous she really was. Her caramel-colored skin seemed to glow today. She had big, hazel eyes that almost looked golden, and so did her blonde curly hair. She looked like... sunshine. Wait, huh? I shook my head and chuckled. This girl’s beauty had me using words like sunshine.

The class we were in had stadium-style seating, so the door, which she had yet to move away from, was in the back of the room, at the top of the stairs. Her cheeks were red, probably because everyone’s eyes were on her after her noisy entrance. Even her blush was sexy.

I saw her about to post up on the wall, so I decided to help her out.

“It’s a spot down here,” I said, pointing to the only empty seat in the room. It was on the front row, and directly across from me.

She made eye contact with me, and I swear the red in her cheeks intensified—if that was even possible.

“Thank you, I apologize for being late,” she spoke as she began to descend the steps and take her seat. Her voice was soft and light, yet smooth and melodic. I wondered if she liked poetry. She had the perfect voice for it.

“It’s alright, Miss...,” Dr. Simon let his voice trail off.

“Westbrook. Davi Westbrook,” her sweet voice responded.

“Westbrook. Let’s not make it a habit, though. Where was I? Oh right, Joseph, do you have anything to add?”

“Nah,” I said to Dr. Simon, then I looked right at Davi. As soon as our eyes met she started fidgeting with her bag. The fact that I made her nervous, helped me feel better about whatever was going on in my stomach every time I looked at her. I decided to mess with her a little.

“If you have questions, you can hit me up,” I said and held her eyes with mine. She was still blushing. I turned my attention to the rest of the students and continued. “My contact information is on the syllabus.”

“Thank you, Joseph. Well, that’s all I have for today. Please make sure you pick up a syllabus from the table before you leave. I will see you all next Monday,” Dr. S said before he gathered his things and left the room.

I stayed in my seat behind the podium because I wanted to catch another glimpse of the Sunshine beauty when she walked away. I didn’t have any intentions of trying to talk to her, but I enjoyed the awkward, yet graceful way that she moved. She didn’t seem to be aware of her own beauty, and with all the attention-seeking women roaming this campus, it was refreshing. She had me curious, but I wasn’t going to act on it. I was losing my train of thought just by looking at her, so I was sure that getting to know her would be too much of a distraction. I didn’t do distractions.

I told myself that I wasn’t going to mess with Davi, but it seemed that the Man upstairs had other plans for the two of us. Right after she gathered her things, she headed for the door, forgetting to grab a syllabus. I chuckled under my breath and stood, before addressing her.
